Eiga wa Senjo
da (Making a Movie is War) - Kinji Fukasaku in Battle Royale
At nearly four hours, this is an exhaustive documentary about the
movie and its director. Originally only available in a costly 2-tape
VHS set (7800 yen) and hard to find, the video is being released on
DVD in conjunction with the BR sequel, Fukasaku's final work.
The DVD (R2, NTSC)release includes several new segments, including
behind-the-scenes footage of Battle Royale: Special Version
and BR cast members sharing their thoughts upon Kinji Fukasaku's
death.
The DVD is available at CDJapan.

GAIDEN:
The Gaiden
(meaning supplementary, or additional) was a home video released in
Japan shortly before the theatrical release of the movie. It's a 50-minute
behind-the-scenes documentary on the film. Gaiden is available in
Japan as a region-free NTSC DVD, or an NTSC VHS tape. Gaiden was finally
subtitled in English and released along with the
Special Version of the movie in England by Tartan Video.

II GAIDEN:
Released on the same day as Battle Royale II, BRII Gaiden
is the sequel's 60-minute counterpart to the original "Gaiden."

The DVD is available at CDJapan
and Amazon Japan. |

Saigo
no Senjo (The Last Battlefield of Kinji Fukasaku):
BRII's counterpart to Eiga wa Senjo Da, this DVD doesn't
dissect scenes from the movie the way EWSD does (and thus clocks in
at about 90 minutes), but it still offers the filmmakers' perspective
on the production. There's considerable time devoted to Kinji Fukasaku's
involvement in the film and the effect his departure and death had
on the film.
