The main characters are introduced. The class is gassed on the bus. The classroom briefing; Nobu and Fujiyoshi killed. Nanahara confronts Akamatsu; Akamatsu is killed by Niida. Megumi is killed by Mitsuko.

Volume 2

Numai discovers Kiriyama has killed their gang and Kanai, only to get killed himself. Ogawa and Yamamoto commit suicide. Nanahara and Noriko are attacked by Oki; Oki is killed by accident. Nanahara is confronted by Motobuchi, who is killed by Kawada. Yukiko and Yumiko try to call for peace, but are killed by Kiriyama.

*Volumes 1 and 2 of the Japanese release hit the newsstands at the same time, presumably to capitalize on the movie's release.

Volume 3

Noriko, Nanahara and Kawada join forces. Mimura finds Yutaka. Yoshimi's story; Yoshimi encounters Kuramoto, but Kuramoto is killed by Mitsuko. Mitsuko kills Yoshimi. Mimura tries to hack the BR computers. Sugimura finds Megumi's corpse. Niida confronts Chigusa. Mitsuko flashes back to her affair with a boxer.

Volume 4

Chigusa kills Niida, only to be mortally wounded by Mitsuko. Sugimura finds a dying Chigusa. Kaori goes insane. Noriko falls ill, and Nanahara and Noriko part ways with Kawada. Nanahara runs into Kaori and Hirono in the middle of a shootout, and tries in vain to talk them out of fighting. Hirono gets away; Kaori threatens Nanahara, but is killed by Kawada and the trio is reunited. They take Noriko to the clinic. Mimura hatches his plan to bomb the school.

Volume 5

Mimura flashes back to his friendship with Yutaka. Shou stalks Kiriyama, but dies when Kiriyama tricks him into staying in a danger zone. Noriko recovers at the clinic. Hirono is killed by Oda. Mimura and Yutaka put his bombing plan to action. Nanahara flashes back to his family.

Volume 6

Nanahara, Noriko, and Kawada meet Sugimura, who leaves to look for Kotohiki; Nanahara, Noriko, and Kawada are attacked by Kiriyama. Nanahara draws his fire away from the others and is wounded. Sugimura fights with Kiriyama and jumps into the ocean with Nanahara. Mimura and Yutaka bump into Iijima.

Volume 7
Japanese release: 8/10/2002

Mimura kills Iijima; Yutaka is killed by Kiriyama. Mimura and Kiriyama fight and prematurely detonate the bomb. Mimura is killed by Kiriyama. Sugimura drops an injured Nanahara off at the lighthouse.

Volume 8

Kawada hides out with Noriko. Sugimura confronts Mitsuko, who runs away after she fails to seduce him. Mitsuko is captured by Takiguchi and Hatagami. Mitsuko tries to kill Hatagami. Hatagami tries to shoot her, but Takiguchi protects her and is mortally wounded. Mitsuko kills Hatagami, then has sex with Takiguchi's dying body as she flashes back to her abusive childhood and how she arranged her stepfather's murder.

Volume 9
Japanese release: 3/25/2003
American release:
10/05/2004
Sugimura confronts Oda, but both are attacked by Kiriyama. Sugimura runs away, and Oda is killed. Nanahara recovers at the lighthouse, but the girls at the lighthouse turn on each other.

Volume 10

American release: 12/2004

Shuya confronts Yuko; Yuko dies. Shuya flashes back as he gathers the lighthouse girls' bodies. Shuya flashes back more as he finds the bodies of Mimura and Yutaka. Shuya is attacked by a delirious Mizuho Inada, but he escapes; Shuya is reunited with Noriko and Kawada. Mizuho is killed by Kiriyama. (thanks to dougbranches for help with this entry).

Volume 11

2/2005
Sugimura finds Kotohiki, and, in a departure from the novel and the movie, she actually goes along with him. Sugimura flashes back to pre-island memories, including his martial arts training. Sugimura is attacked by Kiriyama and the two have a vicious fight as Kotohiki looks on helplessly, with Kiriyama gaining the upper hand.

Volume 12
Japanese release: 3/25/2004
American release:
4/2005
After a knock-down, drag-out fight, Kiriyama kills Sugimura and Kotohiki. Mitsuko and Kiriyama literally primp themselves up for a final showdown with the remaining students (in case you weren't counting, it's just Mitsuko, Kiriyama, Kawada, Nanahara, and Noriko now).

 

Volume 13

7/2005
Kiriyama kills Mitsuko; Kawada recounts what happened during his Battle Royale and the tragic death of Keiko.


 

Volume 14

Kiriyama and our heroes have their showdown; we flash back on Kiriyama's past.
